Blog Post Two
Within my project I’d like to represent high school athletes and the way that they are looked at. High school athletes around the nation are constantly portrayed as reckless and stupid. It may be the case for some, but not the case for all. Athletes are being shown as the “cool” and “mean” kids around high schools.
One example within the media of this is the movie 21 Jump Street. Jonah Hill is portrayed as a chubby nerd and Channing Tatum is the dumb jock. They are both undercover cops, but when they switch their schedules in school Tatum receives all of Hill’s hard classes and doesn’t know what to do. Tatum gets tutors and help in school and Hill is slacking off and passing with flying colors. This movie shows that, just because Tatum is a football player, it means that he is incapable of being a normal student.
A second example is in the tv show Ned’s Declassified School Survival guide. In this Nickelodeon show, Ned and his friends share tips on how to survive high school and somehow the most popular basketball player makes it onto almost every episode. This character fits the role of an airhead. This portrayal makes athletes feel bad and is simply unfair. I want to show how athletes strive to be the best in whatever their sport is and in the classroom. The representation of an athlete is negative within films and Tv shows. Athletes all over the country receive an automatic stereotype and most of the time it doesn’t make sense. I want to fix this bad message and turn it into a great one.
In my film I want to keep some characteristics and then throw some away. I would love to throw out athletes “stupidity.” This just simply isn’t always a fact. I’d also love to throw out the whole popularity thing as it also isn’t the truth. I’d keep the things athletes wear because that is something that represents who they are as a person.

- Action
- Action content- The content placed into action movies and tv shows is completely different than any other genre. Action is used to excite, entertain, and to make the viewer wanting more. Each one of these feelings add up to make action the genre that it is. Action is unique because there is rarely “down time” and everything is constantly moving.
- Action production techniques- the techniques in action movies are used to make everything quicker. The camera shots are usually bold in meaning and want to convey a certain message. The editing is choppy and quick to give the feeling of commotion. There is usually a “chase” in action movies in which the music builds up the whole scene. Action movies try to make everything more dramatic than what it actually is.
- Divergent- This movie has all of the things an action movie needs to have. It has the strong use of colors, good guys and bad guys. The use of sound effects and different quick cuts make the fight scenes in this movie amazing. Overall, the music is what makes this movie what it is. It sets the tone throughout the entire film.
- Ironman- This movie is an action movie but is definitely different from a film like Divergent. Ironman composes tons of special effects that make it a movie unlike any other. Green screens along with costume design allows the viewer to feel that some scenes are completely legitimate. This movie aswell as divergent has quick cuts which makes it an awesome action movie.

Horror
Horror Content- The content placed into horror movies and television shows is extremely different from several other genres. Horror can disgust, frighten, scare, and startle the viewer. Each one of these feelings adds up to what makes horror truly a unique genre.
Horror Production Techniques- The techniques in horror movies are simply used to make everything “scarier.” Some of these techniques are the lack of light, jump scares, and gore. Lack of light gives everything a dark and cold feel. Jump scares are what cause people in theatres everywhere to literally jump out of their seat in terror. Last but not least, horror movies use gore to gross people out. Almost all horror techniques make people feel uncomfortable.
Horror Marketing- Horror movies and shows market in certain ways to get the most money they can. It starts with the colors. Colors used are usually dark and weirdly written which appeals to terror lovers. Next is the audience the horror movies market to. These movies are marketed to young adults through networks on regular tv. Whether it is a poster or a trailer, horror marketing gets recognized right away.
Cabin in the Woods- This movie embodies horror in several ways but, the main one is through setting and scenery. With the movie taking place in the woods, it already gives the viewer an uneasy feeling. The trees and darkly lit cabin adds to the suspense and story of the movie. All in all, the title gives a suspenseful feeling and makes one asks questions to themselves. Uncertainty is huge in horror and this movie has plenty of it.
Insidious- Insidious is about a house that is haunted and a child of the parents that live in the house is taken over by a spirit. Instead of scenery, this movie is a “jumper.” There are pop-outs and quick cuts that cause the viewer to have mini heart attacks throughout the whole movie. Insidious not only uses quick pop-outs but gore as well. This is a true horror movie that fills scary thoughts into the viewers head.

Shot composition is ultra important within a short film... let alone an opening. Each shot has a meaning behind it and that’s what I try to ...
